At the beginning of the week when I first read this assignment, I had no idea what I was going to look for. I started to come up with some ideas: maybe a cool tree, a vibrant flower, or a bug I hadn’t ever seen. (That was quickly out of the question though because I really, and I mean really, don’t like bugs).
I left my house to go on a walk around my neighborhood, and at first, I tried to look for something that I had never noticed before. But honestly, I had taken walks along the same streets so many times that nothing really caught my eye. I turned back in the direction of my house and kept wondering what part of the natural world I could write about.
As I was walking up the driveway, I accidentally tripped over something and realized that it was a rock. It reminded me of how clumsy I am, but also the times that my family and I would walk on the beach in Maine and try to find rocks in all different shapes and sizes. The hardest to find, but the most treasured were the ones shaped like hearts. I realized that is the part of nature that I wanted to explore, and I began my search. It took some time, but I finally found them; two heart-shaped rocks among the flowers and trees in front of my house. Yes, they are just rocks, but they carry so many memories within them.

Sydney, I thought that this was a really cool approach to this assignment. When I think of the natural world, rocks are not the first thing that come to mind, especially when there are countless flowers and colorful plants to explore. It is really interesting that you were able to take something as simple, and perhaps dull, as a rock and turn it into something that holds value and beautiful memories. Since we’re all quarantined right now, perhaps this discovery also served as a reminder that hopefully, you will soon be on the beaches on Maine again, and that hard times do not always last forever.

I really liked your anecdote because it shows that sometimes what you are looking for is right in front of you. I also found your choice of a rock interesting because it is different from what is typically thought of when nature is mentioned. Rocks just blend in but are still a part of the beautiful outdoors.

I really enjoyed your story behind finding what you wanted to write about. I particularly enjoyed the short anecdote about your family, and how you seemed to reminisce the moments, before our whole world was turned upside down. Additionally, I liked how you thought outside of the box when choosing to write about rocks- I feel like we don’t pay much attention to them because there are so many of them around. Great post!
