It’s me, Adam. I’m not exactly sure what you decided to do after high school but I hope all is well for you. Back when we still talked to each other and were actually friends I never would have thought we would cease being the best of friends. It is still quite difficult to imagine a disagreement we had led to a wall of anger being built between us and was never torn down. I always, in the back of my mind, had hoped that one of us would break the ice and have things go back to normal as the best buds we were and simply go back to playing basketball and football like we did. Sadly, that was not the case.
While things did not end very well, I am grateful to have been friends with you. You were one of the first true best friends that I had growing up. Having had the honor of befriending you showed me what true friendship was, and taught me never to forget to have fun, regardless of the hardship. Some of my favorite moments included the times we competed who could catch more footballs one-handed, or our cutthroat one-on-one games at the basketball court. It simply baffles me how we ceased to be friends at the drop of a dime when it seemed like we were inseparable.
I hope things have worked out for you. It would not be a shock to me if you were living out your dream of playing football at Rutgers, as you were one of the hardest working athletes I knew. Or maybe you went into the army as you talked about to help pay for college. I am not quite sure what you could be doing or where you are, but what I do know is that you are doing something you love and strive to take care of your family. Take care of yourself.

It was really moving how you talked about a friend you had lost a long time back, hoping that he is happy in life wherever he might be. It’s extremely and unfortunately relatable how we always seem to treasure the things after we lose them. Life is a journey full of experiences and learning and you really showed that by stating your gratefulness to your childhood friends. I also thought the picture was really thought-provoking, as it could show how simple everyday objects could trigger nostalgic memories.

I love how the image you used relates to something you and your friend used to do together. Although it didn’t end well, it is respectable that you still have respect for him, and his happiness. It is true that we don’t see the value in things until we do not have them, but we must learn from our past. Your expression of gratitude for his friendship and the discovery of true friendship shows how truly close you guys were. Great letter!

I really liked how relatable your letter to John was because, while I can’t speak for everyone, I feel like the majority of people I know all have a friendship such as this one. I had a falling out with one of my best friends from middle school/high school and loved the line “While things did not end very well, I am grateful to have been friends with you”. It hit home for me and I am glad you didn’t forget to appreciate all the good that this friendship brought you instead of focusing on the fact that he is no longer a big part of your life. Maybe you could reach out and be the one to break the ice as you mentioned… Why not, since we are all sitting around in quarantine anyway!! 🙂
